Top Design Tips for Your Bathroom Renovation

Bathroom renovation

We spend a lot of time in our bathrooms. A place of necessity and a spot to pamper, the bathroom even acts as a hospital now and then. This room needs to be well designed and homeowners can expect to spend a fair bit of time thinking about how, when and by whom is this room used.

Tip 1 - Start With Function

Focus on the practical uses for this vital room first. Be sure to consider how the room will be used and whether or not you will need to include a shower, tub or double sink. Fixtures create the base of your bathroom design that all of the other features are built around. Decide what elements will truly serve your family's needs.

Tip 2 - Consider What You Need

Although it's decorating that creates a mood, it's often the design that delivers what you need in a certain space. In the bathroom you need things like privacy, security, durable surfaces and plenty of light. Make a list of the things that you feel are necessary (to yourself and to guests) and make sure they are incorporated into the design.

Tip 3 - Layouts Can Be Tricky

Bathroom renovations are easiest when none of the major fixtures are moved. Keeping the sink, toilet and tub in the same place means you won't have to move the plumbing, which means less work and less cost. But, if a better laid out bathroom will provide what you need and end up being more functional and comfortable it may be worth the effort and cost to move something major. Think long and hard about it before deciding, but don't eliminate the option before giving it some serious consideration.

Tip 4 - Think Long Term

You may be crazy about mosaic tiles right now or absolutely love that boldly colored sink. What you need to remember is that you might not always feel this way, not to mention that resale values plummet with these type of taste-driven renovations. By all means express yourself, choose what you like and what caters to your tastes. Just don't do so without thinking about whether you will have the funds and ability to replace it when your tastes change. Otherwise you'll have to live with it.

Tip 5 - Avoid Dead Space

Although we do spend a lot of time in the bathroom, it isn't the type of room where you converse, dine or spend quality time with your family. So be sure that the space in the room is mainly for traffic and doesn't call out for a couch or television.

Tip 6 - Go Outside of the Box

You don't have to rock the boat too much, but having a few unique features in your bathroom will add to the upgraded appeal. Fireplaces, gas stoves and antique cabinets are all used in today's update and renovated bathrooms. Dare to be different and use your imagination to create perfect bathroom.

With some thinking, forethought and a sprinkle of imagination or two you will design a bathroom renovation to transform your home. Create a space that is tailor-made to your specifications and needs and every moment you spend inside will be better than ever.
